Lampard vs Klopp

The rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool started to catch fire after the 2004/05 Champions League thriller between the two sides. Lampard’s Chelsea won 7-5 on aggregate that day but the game sowed the seeds for a much longer rivalry to follow.

However, the rivalry has taken a new form now. Since last season’s 5-3 thriller between the sides, Lampard and Klopp have continued their war of words. It is safe to say, we can expect some fireworks at Stamford Bridge when the sides meet next week.

The Spark

At the end of last season Liverpool, after a historic Premier League campaign, faced Chelsea, who were fighting for a Champions League spot. The game ended in a thrilling 5-3 victory to Liverpool but, it started a new battle between Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard. During the game, Lampard and Klopp were caught in a heated exchange which cemented what was to come.

Fast forward to today, Klopp and Lampard are still going at each other. The Liverpool boss criticised Lampard for his excessive spending on players. Not one to keep quiet, Lampard, hit back calling the Liverpool boss a hypocrite, referring to Liverpool’s big signings over the last few seasons.

The Upcoming Matchup

Liverpool visits Stamford Bridge on Sunday, to face Chelsea. For the Blues, this game is huge. Not only because of the rivalry between the managers but also to prove that they are genuinely Premier League contenders. For Lampard, the game is a shot at redemption over the high-flying Reds.

On the other hand, Liverpool will want to show why they are the Premier League champions. Jurgen Klopp made it clear that Liverpool would ‘attack’ the Premier League title not ‘defend’ it. The game against Chelsea poses the perfect opportunity for Klopp, to show that his Liverpool team are still hungry.

The battle of Blue versus Red, Klopp versus Lampard, Champions versus Challengers is a matchup no one would want to miss.
